To shoot hoops is based on the basketball meaning of hoop, a high metal ring through which a ball is thrown to score points, therefore meaning to play a game of basketball.



Simple Present: They play basketball.
Present Perfect: They have played basketball.
Simple Past: They played basketball.
Past Perfect: They had played basketball.
Future: They will play basketball.
Future Perfect: They will have played basketball.
